How an answer is made

Provenance is the product.

A chatbot over your PDFs tells you what it thinks. AskJackson tells you where it read it, and shows you.

Search runs locally

Passages are found by keyword on the server. No model is in the search step, so nothing is retrieved that is not in your documents.

The model never writes the citation

The server attaches document, revision and page to every answer. A model cannot invent a source it was never allowed to write.

Every number must appear on a page

A spec, torque, pressure or part number not in a retrieved passage was invented. Corrected once, then withheld rather than shipped.

You get the page itself

As an image and a PDF excerpt, with how the page was read and how confident the reader was. Stronger evidence than any paragraph.

Reading depth

You choose how hard we read. The checks never vary.

A born-digital PDF takes seconds. A 1960s parts catalogue read column by column and cross-checked against its own indexes takes hours. The same checks run on every answer either way.

Text layer: Born-digital documents. Seconds.
One OCR pass: Ordinary scans. Minutes.
Confidence cascade: Two engines, each page kept only when an engine was sure of it. Nothing rather than noise.
Column reading: Parts lists and tables, each column read with only the characters it can hold.
Cross-checked readings: Several independent readings, settled against the document's own indexes.
Vision model: Only for pages nothing local could read. Page count and price quoted before anything is spent.
